This paper explores the working principle of Invisible Watermarking in AI generated images. As diffusion models like Stable Diffusion XL generate photorealistic images indiscernible from human created content, the risk of undetectable deepfakes erodes trust in digital media, due to which ensuring the authenticity of digital content has become significantly important. Recent studies confirm that AI generated images now achieve near human level perceptual fidelity. To identify AI generated content, watermarks are used. It helps in preventing the spread of misinformation through deep fake, protecting property rights, accountability and more. This study examines methods such as Spatial Domain Approach and Transform Domain Approach, used for embedding data/information in a highly realistic image produced by AI generative models. The study highlights how an image serves as a carrier or a host for embedded data or secret information without making any noticeable changes in the original image. The work provides the first comparative analysis of spatial vs. transform domain watermarking, guiding practical implementation choices for AI integrity frameworks.

Invisible watermarking provides an effective mechanism for identifying and authenticating AI-generated images without introducing visible artifacts. Spatial-domain techniques such as LSB are simple to implement and offer high payload capacity, but they are generally vulnerable to compression, noise, and image processing attacks. In contrast, transform-domain techniques such as DCT and DWT offer greater robustness and are better suited for real-world deployment where images may be modified, compressed, or redistributed. This comparative study shows that transform-domain watermarking is a stronger choice when robustness and reliability are priorities, while spatial-domain methods remain useful for lightweight or low-complexity applications. As AI-generated media continues to improve in realism, robust watermarking will remain an important tool for authenticity verification, intellectual property protection, and responsible AI content governance [4,3].
