Rapid urbanization and population growth have led to a significant increase in the generation of solid waste in cities and public places. Efficient waste management has become one of the major challenges faced by municipal authorities and environmental agencies. Traditional waste collection systems usually operate on fixed schedules and rely on manual inspection of garbage bins. These conventional methods are often inefficient because waste bins may overflow before the scheduled collection time, leading to unhygienic conditions, foul odour, and the spread of diseases. In addition, unnecessary trips by waste collection vehicles to half-filled bins result in increased fuel consumption, higher operational costs, and inefficient use of manpower. To address these issues, this project proposes a Smart Trash Collector, an automated waste monitoring system that uses Internet of Things (IoT) concepts combined with GSM communication technology. The main objective of this system is to monitor the garbage level inside waste bins in real time and notify the waste management authorities when the bin becomes full. The system uses an Ultrasonic Sensor to measure the distance between the top of the bin and the garbage level. The measured data is processed using an 8051 Microcontroller, which continuously analyzes the fill level of the bin. When the garbage level exceeds a predefined threshold value, the microcontroller automatically activates a GSM Module to send a Short Message Service (SMS) alert to the municipal authority or waste collection personnel. This alert system ensures that the garbage bin is emptied at the right time, preventing overflow and maintaining cleanliness in public areas. In addition, an LCD display is used to show the garbage status locally, and a buzzer provides an immediate alert signal when the bin reaches the maximum capacity. The proposed system helps improve the efficiency of waste management by enabling timely collection and reducing unnecessary monitoring efforts. It also minimizes environmental pollution, improves public hygiene, and reduces operational costs associated with manual waste management systems. The system is simple, cost-effective, and easy to implement using embedded system components. Due to its reliability and wide communicationcoverage through GSM technology, the system can be effectively used in both urban and rural areas. Furthermore, the Smart Trash Collector can play an important role in the development of smart cities by introducing automation and real-time monitoring in waste management processes. The system can be deployed in various locations such as railway stations, bus stands, hospitals, educational institutions, shopping malls, and residential areas. By ensuring efficient waste monitoring and collection, this system contributes to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment.
KEYWORDS
The Smart Trash Collector using GSM technology provides an efficient and reliable solution to traditional waste management problems. By enabling real-time monitoring and automated alerts, the system ensures timely collection, improves hygiene, and reduces operational costs. Its simplicity and low cost make it an ideal contribution to sustainable smart city initiatives.
